Perryville, Kentucky
Meeting
February 22, 2008
Dear Colleagues:
At the ninth annual meeting of the Historians of the Civil War Western Theater in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, we voted to have the 2008 meeting in the Perryville, Kentucky area. This meeting, to be held on the Perryville battlefield, will be our tenth, and is scheduled for May 15-17. The main meeting day will be Friday, May 16.
Our organization continues to be limited to individuals who have published books and/or articles on the Western Theater of the Civil War by main-line presses and journals. The first time an individual participates in an annual meeting, a one-time $50 fee, paid at the time or in advance, is necessary to become a member of the group. The money is used to help with the expenses of the organization. Graduate students are not required to pay the $50 fee, so they do not have voting rights in the organization. This exception also applies to guests who wish to attend. As you know we always invite National Park personnel who have helped us with local arrangements. All those who are not paid members are welcome to participate in discussions..
Mike Ballard and John Marszalek continue serving as executive directors of the organization. Mike may be reached at P. O. Box 5408, Congressional and Political Research Center, Mitchell Memorial Library, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, MS 39762, phone 662-325-7680; e-mail mballard@library.msstate.edu. Mike’s home phone is 662-285-6834. John can be reached at 108 Grand Ridge Road, Starkville, MS 39759. His phone is 662-323-8068; e-mail johnmarsz@yahoo.com.
Local arrangements for our meeting at the Perryville battlefield have been made by Joan Parks. Perryville is a state historic site, not a national park. Jean Gibowski is handling our reservations at the Inn in the Shaker Village near the battlefield. To get to Shaker village, there are several routes that can be taken. We suggest you consult maps. We can say that if you take Interstate 65 from wherever you are, you can exit at Elizabethtown, Kentucky, then take the Bluegrass Parkway to the Harrodsburg exit. Take U. S. Highway 127 South to Harrodsburg, about 15 miles. At the first stoplight, turn left onto 127 South bypass. Follow the bypass to U. S. 68, turn left and follow U. S. 68 East about 7 miles to the Shaker Village on the left.
For hotel reservations call Ann Voris at 800-734-5611, ext. 1548. The cost is $75 for single occupancy and $80 for double. Be sure to let Ms. Voris know that you are with the Civil War Historians so that you can get the discounted rates.
Meanwhile, fill out the enclosed registration form and return it to us with your one-time membership check, if applicable. Also, if you cannot come, please let us know if you want to stay on the mailing list. WE MUST HEAR FROM YOU BY MARCH 1. This is vital for an accurate count of attendees regarding hotel space, meeting space, and restaurant reservations. If we do not hear from you by then, you may still attend, but we cannot guarantee you a hotel room or restaurant room. We may be able to find you a chair for the meeting, but no promises. So please respond ASAP. If you cannot get your paperwork in by then, at least call or email us that you are planning to attend. Since no pre-meeting fees are being charged, you also may send a fax to 662-325-3560.
Our eating schedule is as follows:

Friday breakfast and lunch, Shaker Inn
Friday evening,
Each member and guest will be required to pay for his/her own meals. Those who helped us with dining arrangements include Adam Johnson, Chris Kolakowski, and Jean Gibrokowski.

Sincerely,
